Tom Kraft completed a 35 year career in the Milwaukee Public Schools, retiring in June of 2010. Tom was the Assistant Principal at Clement J. Zablocki Elementary School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, as well as having served in the same capacity at Humboldt Park K-8 Charter School. Tom also served for varying lengths of time as AP at many other MPS schools, including Benjamin Franklin, Brown Street Academy, 37th Street School, 38th Street School, Victory, Manitoba, the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Tippecanoe, Burdick, 20th, 21st and 27th Street Schools. Tom began his career after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a teacher of emotionally and behaviorally disordered (EBD MRP) at Elm Creative Arts and Congress Schools (he established the first EBD class at each of these schools.) He also served as a special education program support teacher, serving on many IEP teams. An IGS instructor for the past decade, Tom has been an instructor partner with acclaimed IGS instructors John and Kitty Bowen in classes such as 'Creating Higher Student Achievement, Facilitating Learning through a Caring Schools Approach' , "Current Issues and Concerns in Education" and brings a wealth of online instructional experience and ideas to each of his IGS courses. Caring for students, adapting to each educational setting and making the course interesting and practical are strong IGS and Bowen class features that are always a part of Tom's courses. In Tom's online courses, each student has an individual identity and receives full support and interaction, making the course uniquely personal and tailored to each individual's own work setting. Spring - 2012 Graduate Level 3 credit course Current Issues and Concerns for Your Classrooms (K-12) No previous online class experience is required. Credits (CTED 659: University of St. Thomas Graduate class) - Course dates March 3 to May 3, 2012 - 100% Online: Work at your pace! No previous online class experience is required. Internet access and email required, however, internet access is available through city and community libraries This online 3 credit graduate course has been designed to proved the background, theory, concepts and research related to current issues and ongoing debates regarding the latest innovations and directions in K-12 education. The course will provide specific school and classroom ideas, materials, activities and stragegies enabling participants to implement activities in their professional setting. Awareness will result in a positive effect on student achievement and student engagement in higher order skills in each of our classrooms. As an online course, students will learn and use the power of the online world to facilitate communication, gain awareness and valuable resources taylored to their own professional surroundings The class will make use of Best Practices, Collaboration and Student Motivation. Participants in this class will become familiar with and use online learning environments such as a Moodle, a Web Board and Wiki to interact with each other and the instructor. Full support will be available for all students. Self-pacing will make this course ideal for parents, travelers and those planning a busy Summer! These courses are offered by the Institute for Graduate Studies (IGS) which was originally organized in 1971. IGS is dedicated to developing and conducting innovative graduate study programs of high quality and scholarship and has enrolled more than 15, 000 graduate students in study programs in Wisconsin. By special arrangement IGS offers accredited continuing education graduate credits from our Academic Partner, the University of St. Thomas. The University of St. Thomas is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It was founded in 1885 and is located in St. Paul, MN. The School of Education offers masters and doctoral programs, non-degree programs, certifications and licensures. Programs are also offered for people already in the teaching profession as well a those seeking a career change. Courses offered by IGS/University of St. Thomas meet all Wisconsin DPI criteria for license renewal.
